Doing my work from overseas has forced me to think outside the box and has led me to make changes/improvements
in my tongs, etc. I have figured out a way to make my tongs without welding of any kind which is a great improvement from
the past. Basically, using 1/2 round stock, I upset one end to provide enough metal for the jaw and pivot areas. This makes
my tongs very hefty and gives them a very postive feel when holding metal. Also, I now taper the jaws of all my tongs. This
makes for a much stronger tong than just hammering the jaw to an equal thickness as it allows me to leave more metal in a
crucial spot, near the offset for the jaws. I guarantee them to hold well - there is hardly anything in blacksmithing more
frustrating than having a hot piece of metal jumping around when you are hammering not to mention dangerous. When it comes
to working with hot steel, if you can't hold it right, you can't hit it right. All tongs are approximately 14 inches in total
length.
